Carers urged to claim credit for caring

Thousands of carers across North Tyneside could be missing out on up to £2,761 of benefits cash annually, because they simply don’t realise they are entitled to it, Age Concern North Tyneside is warning today.

As part of the ‘More Money in Your Pocket’ benefits campaign, Age Concern North Tyneside is urging all carers of an older person to get in touch for a free benefits check. Each year £740 million in carers’ benefits1 is left unclaimed and many carers in North Tyneside could be missing out on their rightful share.  Last year Age Concern North Tyneside helped hundreds of older people claim over £1million of extra financial help.

Age Concern North Tyneside is today launching its More Money in Your Pocket campaign to carry the thousands of pensioners in North Tyneside through the recession by helping them claim what they are entitled to.  Despite being hit hard by the economic downturn, older people in the UK are still missing out on up to a staggering £5billion of benefits each year. With an average of £690 of Council Tax Benefit alone

From Findus to Care Work

Steve Foster worked nights at Findus in Longbenton for over 24 years.  Facing the closure of the company he had to think what else he could do.

His mother had spent a few years in a Whitley Bay care home, and when he visited her he had really appreciated the kindness and work of the staff looking after her, and had enjoyed talking to both the residents and the staff.  “I thought I might enjoy doing that sort of work” explains Steve, “but I wanted to know more about what it involved, and I realised I needed some experience to apply for jobs in this area.”
